It seems impossible to break teeth. However, it can and does happen. Chipped or cracked teeth are actually quite common. It happens when cavities reside for a long time, weakening the tooth structure. When you bite on a hard substance like a cookie or candy, the weakened enamel will either chip or fracture. In teeth where old fillings occupy extensive areas of the tooth will also weaken the underlying tooth material leading to structural failure under heavy biting forces.
It is not always possible to know if you have a chipped tooth or not. When a small portion is chipped, it does not really cause pain. However, when a large portion is chipped, it hurts. The sensitivity is caused when nerve endings in the dentine (layer found under the outermost enamel covering) are exposed to air, extremely hot or cold food or acidic drinks. You will experience an intense tingling and painful sensation which may last for a short period of time or more.
What do you do when you have a chipped tooth?
- Rinse mouth with warm water
- Apply cold pack on cheeks to reduce swelling
- Apply pressure using tea bags on pain-causing area
- Visit your dentist as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
