Wisdom tooth extraction can be an exhausting experience for both the patient and the dentist. The pain, discomfort and swelling that follow for days after the extraction is a normal part of the healing process. If you are wondering when you could get back to munching your favourite food, then read on to achieve a speedy recovery.
Immediately after the wisdom tooth is pulled out, you may not feel pain as the effect of the anaesthesia will linger for an hour or two. Once the effect has faded you may feel moderate pain in the jaw and the corner of the mouth with some bleeding. It is really important to remember that you need to be careful about not to dislodge the blood clot that has formed in the space left by the tooth. Early breakdown of the blood clot can lead to an extremely painful condition known as dry socket. To avoid these complications and get back to your normal self, follow these simple tips:
- On the day of the extraction, completely avoid taking solid, hot or spicy food.
- Do not brush for the first day of the procedure as it will traumatize the extraction site even more.
- Refrain from spitting or vigorously rinsing your mouth for at least 24 hours after the surgery.
- You can gently rinse your mouth with salt water to keep washing away germs and prevent infection.
- Strictly avoid alcohol and smoking for the first few days.
- Be diligent in taking your prescription pain killer and antibiotic pills if prescribed by your dentist. But remember not to over-dose yourself with pain killers.
- You can place an ice pack over the jaw to decrease the swelling.
- Drink plenty of fluid but do not suck through a straw as the blood clot may get dislodged. Sip small quantities at regular intervals.
- Eat soft, fresh and bland food like apple sauce, yogurt, cottage cheese, fruit juices and gradually move to semi-solid food.
- Most importantly, do not over strain yourself for a few days by doing strenuous exercises or gyming.
To completely recover it may take a week or several days depending on how badly the tooth was impacted and in which direction it was erupting. If you notice in the course of post-surgery days symptoms like pus discharge, high fever, excruciating pain or increase in swelling, visit your dentist or emergency care immediately.
