You might have heard a lot about brushing your teeth twice a day, but does this really help to keep cavities and gum diseases totally at bay? Do you feel that no matter how diligently you stick to the routine, you still find teeth problems cropping up now and then? Does this mean that brushing twice a day is no longer a fruitful option?
The answers is Yes and No! First off , you will be surprised if we tell you that brushing is not as effective in cleaning your teeth and gums as you believe. The truth is that brushing your teeth removes just the superficially adhered food particles and debris but the ones that are stuck into the deep crevices and hard to reach corners of the teeth remain undisturbed causing the maximum damage. The right way of getting rid of all offending agents in your mouth is to focus on flossing and using interdental brushes apart from brushing. This does not mean that you completely quit brushing, but you got to augment your cleaning efforts with additional dental hygiene aids.
You may use all available dental cleaning aids to get a clean and perfect smile but if you time your cleaning efforts wrong, all your hard work will go down the drain. Timing is the key here. It is really important to clean your mouth right after you eat any food; lunch, dinner or even a mid day snack. This sure sounds cumbersome and inconvenient, but we are not suggesting you run to the restroom armed with toothbrushes and floss every time you eat something! All you need to do is swish your mouth with some water or preferably with an anti-bacterial mouth rinse. This helps to wash away tiny food particles that serve as fodder for the germs in your mouth.
Besides following the above cleaning tip, it is important that you floss and brush right before you hit the bed or immediately after your last meal of the day. This ensures that the bacterial load in your mouth is significantly reduced and throughout the night your saliva will do the rest of the job of washing away the remaining germs from the oral environment.
All in all, sticking to the routine and committing yourself to the cause is the only way to achieve what you desire. Flossing at least once a day is the single biggest investment you can make in maintaining good oral health. So, make a resolution to keep at least 5 minutes of your busy life for your teeth and prevent serious problems occurring in future.
