Must know facts before you choose a mouthguard

While mouthguard may seem like just another piece of equipment, use of a properly-fitted mouthguard provides a number of advantages, which we have already discussed in our previous blog.

Depending upon the  need, there are three types of mouthguards available:

1. Stock protectors – These are pre-formed ready to use mouthguards.  Although inexpensive, they are bulky which makes breathing and speaking uncomfortable. They also provide less protection.

2. Boil and bite protectors – This type of mouthguards are made from thermoplastic material which are softened by placing in hot water. After softening process is done, they are placed in the mouth and shaped around the teeth using finger, tongue and mouth pressure.

3. Custom-fitted protectors – This type of mouthguards are specially designed for every individual by taking impressions of their teeth in a professional laboratory.  Working from the impressions, the mouthguard is molded over the teeth model using a special material to fit perfectly. Although this method is expensive and time consuming due to the fabrication process involved, custom-fitted protectors provide most comfort and best protection compared to other types.
