Dental filling is needed when you have cavity or decay in your teeth as it is the most conservative choice for restoring decayed tooth. While silver amalgam and tooth-colored composite are the most common fillings used by dentists, there are other options available such as gold and glass fillings.

1. Silver amalgam fillings – Silver amalgam fillings are the most commonly used dental fillings. The amalgam material consists of a mixture of silver, zinc, copper, tin and mercury (with 50% consisting of only mercury element). These fillings are easy to use and durable too. However, because of the material used, teeth containing them are more prone to expansion and contraction problems.

2. Gold fillings – Gold fillings are not commonly used now compared to other fillings due to their higher cost. However, they are long lasting (10–15 years) and durable to use. Other benefits of using gold filings are that the gold material is non-corrosive and sturdy.
