You’re sipping  your favorite ice-cold chocolate milkshake and suddenly experience the all too familiar shooting toothache or tooth pain. Then, you put on your thinking cap and start  wondering what caused it. Well, all of us have experienced some tooth pain at some point of time but have been too complacent to find out what caused this malady!

Toothache or tooth pain by itself does not reflect a medical condition but is a result of other anomalies in your system. Here we  list the top eight causes of tooth pain.

  1. Tooth decay

One of the most common causes of toothache or tooth pain is tooth decay which in turn  can be caused  by multiple factors. Germs get accumulated on tooth surfaces creating deep holes or “cave“ like spaces.  The loss of tooth material exposes the deeper layers of the tooth to the external environment. Whenever you bite into a food item, the food particles get lodged and pressed into these spaces resulting in sharp shooting pain.

  1. Loose filling

If you have had any of your teeth filled and it’s been a while since then, one sure cause of tooth pain could be a faulty filling that has become loose. Consult a dentist immediately for this and get the filling replaced.

  1. Diabetes

Might seem surprising, but yes, diabetes can also lead to tooth pain. High and uncontrolled blood sugar levels can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay thereby resulting in toothache.

  1. Sinus infection

If you have had a sinus attack, you may remember that your teeth started paining at about the same time. This is because a sinus infection results in swelling of the sinus tissues –  the pain radiates to the teeth manifesting as  tooth pain.

  1. Mouth/jaw injury

Injuring your mouth or the jaw could lead to tooth pain. This is due to the damage caused to the blood vessels and nerves that innervate the teeth. Thus, fractures and injuries of the jaw should be dealt with immediately by  visiting either your dentist or the emergency room.

  1. Heart attack

Heart attack is one of the more dangerous causes of tooth pain. While some might just ignore tooth pain caused  by a heart attack, it is important for you to be able to identify the signs and symptoms of a heart attack so you can save your own or someone else’s life.

  1. Earache

A particular nerve connects the ear to the mouth and jaw. This means, when you suffer from earache, you may also experience some amount of tooth pain.

  1. Tooth damage

Any sort of damage to your teeth can result in tooth pain. This can also mean when you have a broken tooth, you end up with tooth pain. Sometimes, if the damage is major, the tooth pain will be of higher intensity and may require complete extraction or root canal treatment.
