What do I need to do after a dental implant surgery?

Dental implant surgery is a dental procedure that involves replacing of tooth roots with metal, screw-like posts and replacing missing or damaged teeth with artificial teeth. Dental implant surgery is one of the efficient surgical procedures because the dental implants look and function just like the real teeth. Therefore dental implants offer a convenient alternative to dentures or dental bridge that doesn’t fix well.

Dental implant surgery may involve several procedures and steps; however you need to follow certain post-operative precautions to reduce  pain and other complications associated with the procedure.

Here are a few precautions you need to follow after dental implant surgery:

1. To prevent excessive bleeding or redness, place a gauze pad directly on the wound and bite firmly with pressure for 30 mins.
2. Swelling of the operated area is normal so apply ice pack to the cheek next to the surgical site to prevent swelling. It is recommended to keep it at least for 15 minutes.
3. Drink plenty of water and incorporate more of liquid based soft foods. Avoid eating hard food. Take consultation of your dentist at each step and slowly shift to the normal diet.
4. Avoid immediate brushing of teeth, especially for first 8 hours after surgery. After 8 hours you can start brushing gently.
5. If antibiotics are prescribed to prevent infection, following surgery, be sure to take them according to the instructions given by your dentist.
6. Avoid strenuous activities immediately following surgery.
7. Smokers should strictly avoid smoking as it can substantially reduce healing of the wound.
8. Along with the above mentioned instructions, it is very crucial to visit your dentist regularly for a brief follow-up healing check-up.
