Your guide to partial dentures

Partial dentures are removable false teeth which replace one  or more missing teeth in your mouth. They are made of acrylic, nylon or metal and are usually recommended when one or more of natural teeth are still present in your mouth, and therefore referred to as partial dentures.

A partial denture normally attaches to the natural teeth via metal clasps which fix them securely in place. They are mainly used to restore aesthetic appearance and the ability to eat food efficiently.

Types of partial dentures

There are two types of partial dentures: fixed and removable.

1. Fixed partial dentures – Also referred to as dental bridges, these are dentures which permanently attach the artificial teeth to the jaw with a dental crown.
2. Removable partial dentures – These are the prosthesis that fill the gap between two healthy teeth. They are connected by a metal framework that helps to keep them in place. Depending on the material used, partial dentures are further classified into two groups: acrylic partials and acrylic with metal partials.

Depending upon the number of teeth remaining in your oral cavity, your dentist will determine an appropriate treatment plan and the most suitable partial dentures for you.
